What makes a stylish male movie character? Is it the actor, the lines, or the clothes? Truthfully, it’s all of these, but there’s only one element we can emulate, so let’s see who’s wearing what.
- James Bond (Sean Connery)
In the early 1960s, James Bond represented somewhat of a style throwback, but men of a certain age admired him. Bond hated the Beatles and loved tuxedos. One half of the equation made him a style legend.
- Jules Winnfield (Samuel L Jackson)
Pulp Fiction was a very stylish movie. Sporting a tight fro and a thin tie, Winnfield pulled off the look of cool, calm and unflappable. We were all surprised that case wasn’t full of mens designer shirts.
- Jim Stark (James Dean)
Officially the world’s first teenager, Jim Stark sent girls’ hearts racing and guys racing out to buy blue jeans and white t-shirts. Sixty years on, it’s still a look worth channelling.
- Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy)
In Beverly Hills Cop, Foley was running, shooting, swearing and getting the girls in well-worn jeans, battered sneakers and a letter jacket. He showed that with confidence and a smile, you could even pull off a terrible moustache.
- Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt)
While being Brad Pitt certainly helped him, Tyler certainly had style. The look here was 1970s Detroit Pimp, patterned polyester shirts and a red leather jacket. He wasn’t shopping at https://www.ejmenswear.com/ although he may have found some of his shirts there.
- Julian Kaye (Richard Gere)
In American Gigolo, we got a taste of how a young male escort with a rich client’s credit card would choose to dress. He wasn’t over the top in Versace shirts, but vacuous and arrogant in Armani. It was no surprise the American Psycho emulated him.
- Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law)
Rich, confident and with the world at his feet, Dickie Greenleaf from the Talented Mr Ripley was the typical American playboy in Europe. He pulled off the folded cuff style of the 1950s with aplomb.
- Tom Ripley (Matt Damon)
What about the poor boy who suddenly finds wealth? In the same movie, Ripley shows us how much more tailored Dickie would have been if Tom had been in charge. Tom Ripley was Dickie Greenleaf rebooted.
